Depression and the Elderly
Older people are more likely to suffer from depression, and more likely to be undiagnosed, or misdiagnosed. Many people who recognize depression in an elder loved one may simply write it off as a "normal" part of aging. It’s not normal. And, it can be effectively treated, returning the elder person to a productive, happy life.
Depression in seniors can worsen the symptoms of other illnesses, or can even mimic physical disease symptoms. For instance, since depression can cause a loss of focus or even impair short term memory, these symptoms in an elderly person can be misperceived as the beginnings of dementia.
EMPAC counselors are trained in identifying eldercare issues, and have experience in dealing with depression in the elderly. Contact EMPAC for more information, or to schedule an assessment.
