Loss of a Child

Losing a child can be one of the most difficult things that an individual can encounter in life.  When a tragedy like the loss of a child happens, the following points are important to keep in mind:

  1. Keep communication open with your significant other.  Talk about the feelings you are experiencing through the process.

  2. Be aware of the Stages of Grief:

    • Denial and isolation

    • Anger

    • Bargaining

    • Depression, sadness

    • Acceptance

  3. Maintaining good habits such as eating a balanced diet, abstaining from alcohol and other drugs, exercising, and getting enough rest are important.

  4. Even if you are trying to be strong, remember it is OK to cry.

  5. Find reasons to laugh.

  6. Seeking counseling or a support group.  Support groups offer help and guidance from people who have been through, or are going through, the same things.
