A Chore for Every Age

Want to assign some chores to your children, but aren't sure what's appropriate?  Here is a list of everyday responsibilities for different age groups:

Ages 2 and 3:

  • Clear their own place at the table after meals and put dishes on the counter

  • Put recyclables into their correct containers

  • Hang up their coat (make sure the coat rack is low enough for them to reach!)

  • Carry their own laundry to and from the washing area

  • Pick up their own toys and put them away

Ages 4 and 5:

  • Feed pets (with reminding)

  • Bring in the mail

  • Put dirty clothes into hamper

  • Help load the dishwasher

  • Dust some furniture

  • Help carry in groceries, and put some away

Ages 6 and 7:

  • Water plants

  • Wash the dog

  • Weed the garden

  • Make their own bed

  • Put away their clean clothes

Ages 8 and 9:

  • Clean sinks (bathroom and kitchen)

  • Take out garbage

  • Sweep, mop, vacuum

  • Help with washing the car

  • Cook easy foods with assistance (scrambled eggs, toast, etc)

Ages 10 to 12:

  • Do laundry (with some assistance)

  • Fill and run dishwasher

  • Wash the car

  • Change bed linens

  • Help younger children with their own chores

Ages 13 and up:

  • Replace light bulbs

  • Clean out refrigerator

  • Make out grocery list

  • Prepare a meal

  • Wash, dry, and fold laundry

  • Mow the lawn
